Imagine joy in tulip colors–red, purple, yellow, white, pink, orange, and many shades between.
In early May, the small town of Pella, Iowa hosts a Tulip Time Festival in celebration of its Dutch heritage. The weekend event features parades, costumes, food, performances, and of course, tulips. Hundreds of thousands of vibrant tulips.
Here, tulips line the streets, fill the parks, and surround the trees. Like confetti, the scattered blooms brighten both the scenery and the spirit.
Each spring, tourists from many states come to visit this Midwestern town reminiscent of the Netherlands. They stroll among the colorful flowers, soak up the spring sunshine, take photos, and enjoy famous Dutch letter pastries from the local bakeries.
Tulip Colors and Joy
After my visit this spring, I remembered that flowers and their colors often have meanings attached to them. So, I refreshed my memory with some online research. Here are a few examples of what I learned: red tulips, like red roses, represent love; white tulips mean forgiveness; yellow tulips symbolize hope.
Each tulip color is beautiful and uplifting in its own way. Their meanings are similar to the joys the Holy Spirit helps us understand and praise in our relationship with God.
The connections between tulip colors and the joys found in God’s gifts of grace inspired this poem. I pray you are encouraged as you seek the many brilliant shades of joy we are offered through Christ.
Imagine Joy in Tulip Colors
Imagine joy in tulip colors:
gather the Holy Spirit’s bouquet,
respond to God’s gracious gifts,
place praise on display.
Red tulips for devoted love,
the selfless unconditional pursuit.
Find joy in Christ’s sacrifice–
nothing could keep him from
saving those believing God’s truth.
Purple tulips mean royalty,
the elegant hue a king would wear.
There is joy in persevering–
run for heaven’s crown of glory,
in Christ’s inheritance we will share.
Yellow tulips bring good cheer,
warm thoughts, happiness, and hope.
Cherish joy in God’s goodness–
such an abundant life this
growing faith evokes.
White tulips extend purity and forgiveness,
a clean slate, a new beginning.
See joy in who you are becoming–
the Holy Spirit’s observable fruit,
a Christlikeness he is forming.
Pink tulips convey confidence,
encouragement for the journey.
Discover joy in God’s presence–
trouble can’t compete with God’s peace,
bold prayers replace worries.
Orange tulips offer understanding,
fellowship, and appreciation.
Nurture joy in sharing life with others–
adventures together require patience,
so step kindheartedly among creation.
Imagine joy in tulip colors,
petal shades define the unseen.
Hearts abiding in Christ do hold
continuous celebrations of spring!
