As Christians, we are inspired by God’s own generosity towards us (John 3:16, James 1:17, 1 John 4:19). With the help of the Holy Spirit, we seek to reflect his generous character through our own thoughts, words, and actions. Studying what the Bible has to say about generosity can help us learn to share more abundantly in our own lives. Use these 25 Bible verses about generosity to encourage your heart to share gladly today!
“Generosity is an attitude of gladly sharing whatever we might have regardless of wealth.” ~Charles F. Stanley, In Touch Ministries.
25 Bible Verses About Generosity
(1) The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:25
(2) Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
(3) And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.
2 Corinthians 9:8-10
(4) Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God.
2 Corinthians 9:11-12
(5) Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.
Luke 6:38
(6) Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
Matthew 6:1-4
(7) If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?
1 John 3:17
(8) Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
John 13:35
(9) Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2
(10) And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.
Matthew 10:42
(11) And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Acts 20:35
(12) Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19
(13) Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.
Proverbs 22:9
(14) While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”
Luke 21:1-4
(15) Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money!
Psalm 119:36
(16) And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.
Hebrews 13:16
(17) Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly.
Psalm 112:5
(18) Dear children, don’t let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous.
1 John 3:7
(19) Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Matthew 6:19-21
