November makes it easy to give God thanks and praise. Here in Iowa, the month arrives like a present from his hands, all wrapped up in fall’s gorgeous colors. Trees of gold, orange, brown, and red sway back and forth in step with the wind. Eventually letting go, their leaves drift and spiral until the ground is covered in a delicate splendor.
Blessings of Fall
My dog, Louie, and I like the curious rustling sounds the leaves make under our feet when we walk through the woods in the fall. We enjoy the smells too. Louie’s nose points down, traveling against the damp earth while mine remains up, breathing in fresher air. We also love the cooler temperatures which allow us to comfortably meander beyond our usual route. With all these outdoor seasonal blessings, it just seems to make sense for November to host our holiday of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Day comes not only rich in outdoor beauty, but also typically full of hearty food, fun traditions, and memorable time with family and friends. With the pressures of last minute Christmas shopping still weeks away, Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to be mindful, connect with each other, and appreciate our blessings.
How Giving God Thanks and Praise Strengthens Faith
During this month of gratitude, I gathered Bible verses about giving God our thanks and praise. I found the large number of verses on the subject striking and the passionate tone of their words humbling. As I spent time thinking about some of the verses, especially in the context of their entire chapters, I renewed and deepened my understanding of how giving God our gratitude strengthens faith.
For example, giving him thanks and praise for help in past situations reminds us to place current troubles and worries in his capable hands. Trusting in his control, instead of our own, places him between us and the issue we are dealing with. As attention shifts away from the problem to him…to his promises…and to his power, he strengthens our faith with his goodness. Our situation may remain the same, but we become different in it. Always working for our good, he fills us with more of what we need, giving us things like: patience, comfort, hope, courage, peace, and guidance.
And, God strengthens the faith of others through our gratitude too. When they hear us giving him praise and see the difference it makes in how we handle life, their hearts are also encouraged to remember, give thanks, and draw closer to God.
Give God Gratitude Each Day and on Every Occasion
God is good. Very good. Giving him thanks and praise is emphasized throughout the Bible, during every season and on special occasions. In joyful and sorrowful times, in peaceful and conflicted times, through all the good and difficult times, we can bless God with our gratitude and grow closer to him each day.
I hope you enjoy this collection of verses and are encouraged in the spirit of thanksgiving all year long. Press on in faith my friends! ~Jamie
