It’s not too difficult to offer God some words of praise when life goes well and meets our expectations. But, giving him that same deserved appreciation during trying times can seem especially challenging.
On hard days, our schedules and emotions become overwhelming, so we tend to be less aware of God’s goodness. We may also get discouraged, start doubting God’s love, and wonder what to praise him for. Even if we do recognize God’s care in our situation, we sometimes struggle to find words of praise that seem fitting.
Where can we find worthy, sincere words to praise God?
The Book of Psalms is an excellent place to begin looking for inspiring words of praise. The psalms are a collection of prayers and songs which express praise during times of celebration and despair. They serve as encouraging reminders of God’s goodness and faithfulness.
In times of hardship, when we can’t easily recall his blessings, the psalms can help us remember what he provides. Through their reassuring verses, we find the words we are searching for–words communicating devotion and gratitude for his protection, wisdom, comfort, forgiveness, hope, and all of our needs.
Using the psalms to praise God also restores and nurtures faith
Like the other books in the Bible, God inspired the authors’ words in Psalms to guide us into an everlasting relationship with him. With the help of the Holy Spirit, especially on hard days, we can lean on verses of praise to also strengthen our faith.
Praising God in the midst of a trial is a challenge to faith, but it is a challenge God has readily equipped us for. Next time you face adversity and find yourself at a loss for words of praise, let the psalms speak on your behalf. Use the verses below to thank God for who he is and what he is doing in your life. May the psalms help affirm your trust in God and encourage you as you grow in a genuine, unique, and loving relationship with him.
