Far away and long ago,
a weary couple made their way,
traveling home to Bethlehem
for the census of the day.
Both trusted God
for a miracle to come.
A babe to save the world–
our eternity to be won.
Named Jesus for he saves,
but by many titles he is called
a compassionate protector
and provider of peace unequaled.
He is God with us–Immanuel,
an astounding prediction,
a prophecy to be.
Jesus, God in human form,
the way to follow; he is heaven’s lead.
An example he sets.
Our sorrows he knows.
Through his Word and his presence,
he heals us whole.
Easily we can miss what Christmas means.
Bound by distractions and Santa suits,
we buzz past the manger and
give wishes to a man in black boots.
Each day, Jesus is a gift with no wish required.
He is here when we seek and eagerly pursue.
Found in peace, love, and kindness,
he shines within talents and quiet things we do.
He is here among Christmas joys and heartaches,
through holiday trappings of boxes and bags.
In order to be with us always,
even in this life’s demands,
Jesus readily traded his heavenly riches
to be wrapped in manger rags.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 NIV

Thank you for traveling with me on A Scriptured Life this year. I am glad you are here with me. Press on in faith, my friends! ~Jamie

Here I am in 2024 and finding your site. It is brining me joy in a difficult Christmas season. It is a year of firsts for me. My first without my mom. ๐ญ My first time living alone at 49 and never imagined how much weight is on my shoulders and how difficult it would be! Honestly, without my dog, Toby, I would probably be in a mental hospital. He is keeping me going in the physical world, while Jesus is keeping me going in the heavenly realm. My first time going back to church after 20 years (long story there about the death of my dad, I got angry at God and for the last 20 years) My first time finding a church I felt welcomed at and I got baptized as an adult. I just feel like I don’t belong here anymore since my mom, dad, and twin sister are in heaven, I feel like I belong with them. My uncle is the only family I have left now, and he’s 2 years older than my mom, so now I’m worried about him as well. But I stumbled on to your site and it was comforting and peaceful an exactly what I needed to see, so THANK YOU, GOD BLESS & HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! ๐๐๐ผโ๏ธ๐๐๐๐
Dear Grace, Thank you for your note. I am sorry to be so delayed in seeing and responding. I am grateful you found some joy this past holiday season through the posts on my website. Life is certainly hard, but yes, we always have our hope in Jesus. He is with us through all of it, even when we don’t feel it! I am praying for you to feel his peace and blessings throughout this new year.

Jamie, what a deeply beautiful poem! I’m a little behind with everyone’s Christmas posts, but I am finding this after Christmas reflection very moving. You captured so many of Jesus’ amazing and sacrificial gifts. “Trading His heavenly riches to be wrapped in manger rags.” What a Savior! Oh how He loves us!
God bless you and yours in the new year!
Thank you Melissa, your comments mean so much to me. As a writer yourself, I know you understand how hard it is to get posts done during the busy Christmas season…yet, it is the most important time to reflect and do them! Glad we cheer each other on. Blessings for your 2019 as well!
