Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:4-5 ESV
This verse chased me over the summer. Yes, it was relentless in its pursuit, demanding my attention day and night, so much so that I became slightly annoyed with its persistence. I was, after all, keeping busy and enjoying all the good things summer offers like road trips, visits with family and friends, being outside, and eating too much pie.
Oh, but those words “abide in me” just kept landing in front of me. They showed up in Bible studies and books I read, sermons and songs I listened to, even on billboards as I rolled down the highway. I got curious. What does God want me to learn about abiding? What did Jesus mean when he said, “Abide in me?” How do I abide?
Defining “Abide in Me”
In his BE Bible Study Series, respected author and Bible teacher Dr. Warren Wiersbe, offers this definition of abide:
“it means to keep in fellowship with Christ so that His life can work in and through us to produce fruit.”
Fellowship with Christ can be thought of as the deeply close relationship, spiritual bond, and active partnership experienced while sharing life with him. Fruit is a variety of character traits produced by the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23). It is also the goodness produced from other areas of spiritual growth in our lives including obedience, holiness, service, and praise to God.
Jesus tells us to abide (i.e. remain, continue, live) in him like a branch does on the vine. By persevering in our connection or fellowship with him, we receive the nourishment needed to thrive and to live a good, fruitful life.
Everyone Saved Abides
When we become true believers in Christ, our salvation is secured and we enter into a permanent relationship with him (we abide in him). Everyone who is saved abides, but their level or state of abiding can vary over time and within circumstances. We may feel distant from Christ at times, but as true Christians, our lives are united with him, so we always abide to some degree.
No Standard Way to Abide
There is no standard way to abide or to keep in fellowship with Christ. There are common abiding activities such as prayer, reading the Bible, and service to others. But, because everyone is different, the ways we best connect and develop an intimate relationship with Christ are unique.
Our role, in any abiding activity, is to stay attentive and responsive to God’s work in and through us. It is helpful to ask ourselves questions like: How might God be strengthening my faith and character right now? Is he pruning or cutting away things I love more than him? What choices would he want me to make? And, do the answers I think I’m hearing to my questions align with what the Bible teaches?
The Holy Spirit’s Work in Abiding
As we abide, the Holy Spirit works actively within us, gradually transforming our character to resemble Christ’s character more and more. Through our thoughts, feelings, experiences, learning, and prayers, he inspires us to follow the example Jesus’ life set for us (1 John 2:6).
While learning from the Holy Spirit, our desire for understanding and obeying Christ’s teachings increases (John 15:10, 1 John 3:24). Our words and behaviors, although never perfect, start changing for the better as sin becomes more apparent and we turn away from it (1 John 3:6).
Increasingly, an awareness and assurance of God’s presence in our lives develops (1 John 4:13). People become curious about the changes they see in us, and we become eager to share God’s goodness with them. The fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) grows within us, flows from us, and draws others closer to God. This fruit cannot be produced through our own effort or striving; it is produced by staying connected to Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in our lives.
Abiding in Christ During the Realities of Life
Life is full of steady changes and unexpected challenges. Schedules fill up, problems occur, and people need us. When circumstances distract or overwhelm us, we can begin feeling disconnected from God. At times, it is hard to find a quiet moment to focus on our faith. How do we abide in Christ when the day is loud, busy, difficult, or messy? We remember he is the true Vine–the one in control, our provider, the one who sustains us (John 15:1). We are the branches–staying connected for strength, relying on him for growth and fruitfulness (John 15:4). We trust in his love and in his Word. Always abiding, we cling to the vine, keep in fellowship with him however we can.
Abiding in Christ is…
Abiding in Christ is taking a walk outside
Turning off podcast promises for solving problems
Noticing the colors, the trees, the breeze
Not missing crawling bugs or flying cottonwood fluff
Remembering all this surrounding beauty comes from God
Seeing him in all things, learning about him through all things
Feeling grateful, giving him thanks and praise
Abiding in Christ is seeking him not just when it’s convenient
But also when it’s most inconvenient
When feelings seem insurmountable
When tasks threaten to overwhelm
When no one else seems to care
It is opening your Bible in the midst of it all
Saying a prayer for him to meet you there
Letting him see the real version of you
Saying, “Help,” “This hurts,” or “I’m so confused”
Trusting, trusting, trusting him to handle the unknowns
Knowing he never leaves you to face scary things alone
Abiding in Christ is being mindful of his presence
In little moments like
Washing your face, driving, cooking, caring, humming a tune
In big moments like
Celebrating, achieving, the first hello, the tearful goodbye
In quiet moments like
Learning, praying, working, reflecting, waiting
In loud moments like
Fully scheduled days, deadlines, crowded spaces
It’s seeking his rhythm of rest in all moments, day by day
Abiding in Christ is following his life example
Striving to listen and care for others like he did
Believing each person holds God’s goodness and light
Serving humbly, not as an obligation, but because you want to
Letting the joy of giving flow abundantly from your heart
Abiding in Christ is obeying his commands
Wholly loving God and others too
Studying his life to bring yours into alignment
Turning away from bad habits and sinful patterns
Praying the Holy Spirit guides your mind, body, and soul
Abiding in Christ is recognizing his life changing power in you
Stepping out and sharing your story
Bravely letting others know what you’ve seen him do
Being generous with the hope you’ve been given
Encouraging them to find his light shining in their life too
Abiding in Christ is understanding you are only human
Perfection is not expected this side of heaven
Only a daily commitment for character renewal
Abiding is the heart’s contract for a slow remodel
It’s a steady hammering beat of worship
The glorious accompaniment to everything you do
